coolbonehead asked: Hi, I've got a situation/question. I'm looking to travel reasonably indefinitely (minimum a year). I'll be starting in Indonesia and working West, doing as much overland as possible. Being that I'm covering a fair amount of distance/a lot of it in variable conditions I think travelling light is as much a pragmatic consideration as a more lifestyle one. I've been looking at...

altoidamadeus-deactivated201203 asked: Howdy, I am heading to egypt for 3 weeks. I've never left the country but I have traveled within the states. I absolutely hate traveling with stuff, but more so I hate buying things I know I have at home that I should've just brought with me. There is only 1 thing I need to bring with me absolutely and that is my laptop, its small, 13" very light. Everything else is optional. ...

I’m trying to raise money and donate it to the Green Beret Foundation. The Green Beret Foundation provides unconventional resources to facilitate the special needs of Special Forces operators wounded, ill and injured and imparts unique support to the Special Forces community.
Often, those that go and give it all come back injured. That’s my story too. An IED exploded on the road we...

Goruck GR1 Makes the Grade
http://matthyatt.com/blog/2011/12/25/goruck-gr1-backpack-makes-the-grade.html
I’m digging the Goruck GR1 backpack. I got it a couple months ago for a photo trip to Yosemite, and I’ve used it ever since for everything from hiking to business trips. It’s now my go-to bag for traveling and anything outdoors. For business trips or other travel, it carries enough clothes for a...

Reasons to pack light
1- In and out of airports in no time and have access to ALL your stuff during the flight.
2- It’s easier to carry a light pack for longer distances and allows you to enjoy the trip better while saving you energy.
3- It is easier to access what you need quickly when you’re on the move and it’s also great to keep things organized.
4- It is easier (and cheaper) to store it on train station...
How light do you go? →
Click on the link above and tell everyone how light you go.
Light is fast, again.
A GR1 with 2 pieces of underwear, 2 pairs of socks, 1 tshirt, 1 polo shirt, my iPad and some toiletries.
On me: Capilene long sleeve shirt, jeans, shoes and a jacket.
Arrived at the airport, went thru security and to my gate. Time: 17 minutes (mostly because of the security line).
Had a good breakfast while waiting for the plane, read a book.
Arrived at my destination. Found my way out of...
Skiing with a GORUCK GR1
jonadair:
I’ve water tested GORUCK’s bags here before but I haven’t before had the opportunity to use one in the snow. That all changed last week when I experienced Alpine snowfall at its finest while skiing in Avoriaz, France.
Read on to see how the GR1 coped.

As you stand in endless lines this holiday season, here’s a comforting thought: all those security measures accomplish nothing, at enormous cost. That’s the conclusion of Charles C. Mann, who put the T.S.A. to the test with the help of one of America’s top security experts.
Or better described by John Gruber:
$1.1 trillion down the toilet. Enjoy your holiday air travel.

Entry-Level Mountain Climbing
Sean : How would you recommend someone enter the world of alpine climbing? Obviously you’ve done it in the past. I’m a young guy who’s recently started rock climbing but ice climbing and mountain climbing really appeal to me.

Thanks!

GORUCK: The Most Passionate Brand Following In the... →
I’ll hazard that a tiny fraction of GORUCK’s success has been in the style or the simplicity of their bags. That helps, but the quality of their construction is a much bigger factor. Many backpack companies tell their customers that their bags are tough, GORUCK knows their bags are near-indestructible and stands by them without fear.
Every GORUCK bag is made by American workers...

Tell me about the Goruck challenge, and why you decided to do it.
They say if you have to ask, it can’t be explained. And so of course I’ll try to explain it: if you hear about the challenge — 12+ hours of grueling physical tasks with a 55-lb. backpack on your back — and you think it sounds like fun, you’re probably right for it.
It’s kind of like getting a taste of what the Special...

GORUCK Field Pockets
It’s been almost 2 months since I started using the new GORUCK Field Pockets. I have a GR1 Field and a Radio Ruck Field and they come with me everywhere I go: business, pleasure, exploration and other activities. They helped a lot in organizing the small stuff, the provide a secure and padded location to place hard drives when I need to, camera lenses and other fragile stuff, and I can use...
helgeg asked: Looking at your article "TRAVELING FOR BUSINESS AND PLEASURE - 4 DAYS, 3 NIGHTS", I was just wondering what size the Eagle Creek pack-it folder is. On their site I see three models, 15, 18 and 20. I am guessing yours would be the 15 or 18 to fit in the GR1.

I don’t agree with the assumption that running is all mental. With running, you know what’s coming up and you can check out. This challenge is very mental. You don’t know anything about it. I find it’s much more challenging to not know than knowing. Until you feel or experience the challenge, you have no idea. The GORUCK Challenge is Cadre dependent, route...
Extreme Light Travel | Miss Minimalist →
In order to maximize our travel time, my husband and I usually book a very early flight the day we arrive, and a very late flight the day we leave. Therefore, we often wind up carrying our bags for much of the first and last days. (Sure, we could leave them at the hotel, but we don’t like to “waste” time going back to get them if we have a full schedule.)
My objective, then, was to pare...
Simple and light equals freedom, agility and mobility.

Hi there,
I’ll be in the South Pacific for about three months, before going on a year-long work holiday in Australia. I plan on only bringing my Boreas Buttermilks 55, but need a daypack for when I leave the big daddy back at the hostel. My ideal requirements are:

GORUCK GR1 as a camera bag part II

Having read my post on how I used my GORUCK GR1 as a hardcore camera bag, I was asked by Tumblr user Ray Park exactly how the insert from a Billingham Hadley Pro fits inside GORUCK’s GR1.

Kid's packs
My kindergartners use the Kelty Grommet. It’s the right size, it’s light, and most importantly, it’s well built. I bought them almost two years ago for the kids’ first flight, and they’re still in great shape.

gentrymarks asked: Greetings! Having spent significant amounts of time beneath heavy packs, I'm having difficulty approaching the GR1/GR2 with anything but skepticism, primarily because it doesn't have a waist strap.
